WATERCOLOUR - BEGINNERS AND BEYOND  (3 days), and...

"PAINT WITH JOHAN" MENTORING WORKSHOP (3 days)

Watercolour - Beginners and Beyond (3 days)

Content:

1. Equipment, materials & accessories.

2. Preparation.

3. Techniques.

4. Colour mixing.

5. Rules: Composition, perspective, depth, colour theory.

6. Basic steps of creating a painting.

7. What is art?

8. Finishing touches.

9. Studio & workstation.

10. Step onto the road to success!

Materials:

• Watercolour paints, preferably in tubes. We recommend Winsor & Newton “Cotman” paints. Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Orange, Light Red, Cerulean Blue, French Ultra Marine, Cobalt Blue, Winsor (or Prussian) Blue, Raw Umber, Alizarin Crimson, Indian Red, Raw Sienna,  Hooker’s Green, Payne’s Grey. We do, however, supply you with a palette with sufficient paint to last you through the course.

• Masking fluid. Dala makes a good one. Share a bottle with someone if you can… it goes a long way!

• Watercolour paper. We will supply for initial exercises and charge per sheet used thereafter. We recommend Saunders, Arches or Fabriano 300 gram Not (cold pressed) paper (or, preferably, 640 gram.)  Bockingford 425g will do and is less expensive. Beware of cheap paper! Brown gummed tape, 1 ½ inch wide. We will supply.

• Watercolour brushes. This is tricky… bring what you’ve got. The best brush is sable hair, but very expensive. I recommend Winsor & Newton’s “Sceptre Gold” brushes. They are a mix of sable and synthetic… lovely brushes that will last for many years, hold large amounts of paint. Beware of cheap brushes.  If you buy synthetic brushes, get the best quality. You will need:

1 x round No. 14, 1 x round No. 8, 1 x 1 & ¾ inch “hake” brush (45mm) and 1 x 19mm flat brush or mop brush. This is VERY important for washes, so I recommend a filbert of either squirrel or sable/synthetic. Again, give me a call or email and we can decide what’s what and if we can make a plan.

• Plastic palette with at least 12 wells for holding paint. This is very important… or two smaller palettes will do. We supply this with paint for the course and you can purchase it after the course.

• Ruler, good-quality pencils (1 x 2B, 1 x 4B), pencil sharpener, putty eraser, sketch pad.

• Masking tape, 36mm wide.

• Craft knife or “Stanley” knife… nice to have, or use ours.

• Most importantly, enthusiasm - as much as you can bring! It costs nothing.

Drawing
Three-day course in life-drawing  basics, and optional 4th day of figure drawing.
R 2500  |   3 Days

Art-for-All Studio, Storms River Village,  Tsitsikamma

(Scroll along for info on content, materials, costs and schedules)

Our fully equipped, air-conditioned studio in Storms River Village offers easels, table workstations and other basic studio equipment. Materials required for your courses can be supplied through the studio if you cannot get hold of everything you need to bring with. Please arrange with us before the time!

Content:

The course starts off with the clarification of the concept of drawing from the right side of the brain, which involves drawing negative space and maintaining a balance between knowing (information) and seeing (observation). A number of drawing exercises are done in class to enable the brain to kick into this mode of seeing and drawing. These and other drawing exercises are alternated with discussions and demonstrations of composition, depth, perspective and value contrast.

Still-life drawings will be made from a photo, then from a still life set up in class; followed by more life drawing.  A fourth day of figure drawing from a model is optional.

Please bring examples of your work for constructive feedback that will enhance your learning during the course.

Materials:

Bring all your drawing tools and materials - pencils, charcoal sticks, erasers, kneaded erasers, sketch books, sketch pads, rulers, sharpening tools, fixative and masking tape - as discussion and advice regarding these will form part of the course.

Materials can be bought through the studio if arranged well in advance and depending upon availability at our nearest art supplier, but we will lend you some stuff too.

If necessary, ask your art supplier to suggest suitable products similar to those stated below. Please call Susan at (083) 467 9388 if you need advice.

  1. A3-size 200g rough cartridge drawing paper, such as an Ashrad Sketch Pad (price around R180+). The studio supplies 80g paper for drawing exercises, and sells brown paper and newsprint per meter for life drawing.

  1. Pencils HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B and a Cretacolor eraser or another eraser suitable for drawing. The Steadtler Tradition red-and-black “school” pencil is excellent and in some cases better than more expensive artist brands. Beware of the fake Steadlers, though – identifiable by the absence of “Tradition” in the description.

  1. Soft charcoal sticks and a putty eraser (Cretacolor makes these, too). A soft charcoal pencil is also very handy!

  1. White chalk pastel to use with charcoal, e.g. a Cretacolor pastel stick, available in single colours.  A good blackboard chalk is often soft enough to use for this purpose.

  1. NB: Fixative for your drawings. Clear matt spray varnish is excellent for this purpose and usually much cheaper that artist’s fixative (which is sometimes just clear matt varnish marketed under a different label!) You can also use hairspray, but the old-fashioned type, such as Dippity-Do or Fiesta, which is actually a lacquer.

Costs:

•          R2500 per 3-day course (including refreshments during breaks and 3 lunches). The optional fourth day of figure drawing from life costs extra.

•          Discount of 5% for groups (two or more people)

•          Discount for local residents. Please enquire.

•          Regular weekly classes can be arranged.

•          A deposit of R750 is required upon booking and the balance is due before commencement of the course. Fifty per cent of the deposit can be refunded if a cancellation is received up to one month before the course starts. No refunds if cancelled less than a month before the course. "Paint with Susan" mentoring workshop (3 days)

Not for beginners.

Content:

In this workshop, every person works on his/her own project, under guidance of the tutor.  It starts off with critique sessions of existing work. Bring along a maximum of three artworks for constructive criticism: One you hate, one you love, and one you got stuck with, for example. You can do further work on these during the workshop in addition to starting a new project of your choice. Bring reference materials for your new project, choose from our reference materials, or take photos in the village.

NB:  Please be careful of using copyrighted photos or artworks by other artists. Painting the artwork of another person merely limits you to mistakes already made by the artist and restricts you to information about the subject matter as already adapted and interpreted by them. Rather choose or set up similar subjects and take your own photographs. Remember, composition starts with setting up or choosing a subject - but you can change it in any way you want when you do your painting. Please bring printouts, as the village does not offer colour printing facilities, or you can work from your tablets.

Materials:

Bring along your usual art materials and canvases. Also refer to the “Materials” section on Pages 1 & 2. Please call SUSAN at (083) 467 9388 for advice.

Costs:

•          Costs are the same for both courses.

•          Discount of 5% for groups (two or more people).
